Sleeping until noon on Saturday can feel like the perfect answer to a draining week. But doctor and microbiota specialist Sara Marín says a large weekend shift may unsettle the circadian rhythm, the internal clock that helps time sleep, hormones, digestion, and alertness. Good sleep also supports learning, memory, and clear thinking.
During an interview hosted by Isabel Viña, she said moving from an 8 a.m. weekday wake-up to noon or later on weekends can take about three days to correct. The broader warning is supported by sleep research, but the exact recovery time is not a universal number and can vary from person to person.
Why weekends feel like jet lag
The circadian rhythm is a roughly 24-hour timing system found in the brain and throughout the body. Light and darkness are its strongest signals, while meals, activity, and regular wake times also help tell the body when the day has begun.
A late Saturday or Sunday wake-up pushes several of those signals later. That mismatch between workday and free-day schedules is often called “social jet lag”, and it can make Monday morning feel like a time-zone change without the airport. The clock notices.
The three-day claim
One weekend can move the clock only so much. In a study of 15- to 17-year-olds, a typical weekend schedule with bedtime 90 minutes later and wake-up three hours later delayed the evening melatonin rhythm by about 45 minutes on average.
That finding shows the body clock can shift over only two days. It does not establish that every person needs exactly three days to recover after sleeping until noon, since age, natural sleep timing, morning light, bedtime, and the size of the schedule change can all affect readjustment.

Catch-up sleep has limits
The doctor also argued that four extra hours on one day do not simply repay an entire week of lost sleep. That point is mostly consistent with controlled research, although extra weekend sleep may still reduce immediate sleepiness and provide some short-term relief.
A randomized laboratory trial led by Christopher Depner at the University of Colorado Boulder followed 36 healthy young adults. People limited to five-hour sleep opportunities during the workweek and then allowed weekend recovery sleep still gained weight and showed reduced insulin sensitivity when short sleep returned, meaning their bodies became less effective at managing blood sugar.
The study was small and cannot prove that sleeping in is always harmful. What it does show is more practical than dramatic. A weekend cannot reliably replace adequate sleep on most nights.
Late dinners matter
Meal timing was the other major part of the advice. She described insulin and melatonin as “enemies” and suggested finishing dinner by 8 or 9 p.m., but that phrase is a simple metaphor rather than a literal rule about two hormones switching each other off.
A randomized crossover trial led by Marta Garaulet at the University of Murcia used glucose drinks to simulate early and late dinners in 845 adults.
When the late condition occurred one hour before habitual bedtime, melatonin levels were three and a half times higher, the insulin response was 6.7% lower, and the blood sugar response was 8.3% higher than in the condition four hours before bedtime.
Closeness to bedtime may matter more than a fixed dinner hour. Someone who goes to bed at 10 p.m. and someone who sleeps at 1 a.m. do not have the same biological evening, so “dinner by nine” cannot be a universal cutoff.
A steadier routine
The simplest approach is to keep wake time reasonably close from one day to the next, including weekends. Morning daylight can reinforce that schedule, while an earlier bedtime is usually a better way to add sleep than repeatedly moving the alarm several hours later.
Sleep duration still matters. A National Sleep Foundation consensus recommends seven to nine hours for most adults and eight to ten hours for teenagers.
Real life will never run like a laboratory, so occasional disruptions are expected, but the useful habit is returning to a stable schedule rather than trying to repair every exhausting week with one marathon sleep.
Persistent insomnia, unrefreshing sleep, or daytime exhaustion deserves medical attention instead of another viral sleep trick. A steady body clock, enough total sleep, and meals that do not crowd bedtime form a more reliable strategy than chasing a perfect hour on the clock.
