Makeup artist Laura Geller knows a thing or two about beauty. As the founder of Laura Geller Beauty and a longtime advocate for women over 50, she’s built her career helping people embrace skin that changes with age. Recently, she called out one common makeup mistake that can instantly make fine lines and wrinkles look more pronounced.
In a recent video shared with Shop Today, Geller revealed that using too much powder is one of the biggest culprits when it comes to makeup mishaps on mature skin. Here, we’ll explain why this happens, what Geller recommends instead, and her go-to products for achieving a soft, radiant finish without emphasizing texture or dryness.
The makeup mistake that makes wrinkles stand out
When asked about the most common mistake women with mature skin make, Geller didn’t hesitate. “Too much powder”, she said. “I think as we get older, you need to change the formulas that you use. So you may be used to using something, but you need to meet your skin where the needs of your skin are at that moment“.
Powder can be helpful for setting makeup or reducing shine, but Geller explains that it often has the opposite effect on aging skin. Dryness, loss of elasticity, and fine lines all become more noticeable when layers of powder settle into creases. Instead of a smooth, even finish, the result can look cakey and textured.
As skin matures, its natural oil production decreases. That means products designed to mattify can actually highlight dryness and draw attention to wrinkles. Geller recommends switching to more hydrating, creamy products that move with the skin rather than sitting on top of it.
Foundation and powder formulas that worked at your 30s might not flatter your skin at 60. Adjusting to lighter, moisture-rich products can create a fresher, more natural look without sacrificing coverage.
Makeup tips for radiant skin after 50
To support skin that’s naturally drier and more delicate, Geller suggests updating your routine from the base up. She believes a few smart product swaps can completely change how makeup sits and looks throughout the day.
- Start with a hydrating primer. A smoothing, moisture-rich base helps foundation glide on evenly and prevents it from settling into lines.
- Opt for a tinted moisturizer instead of a heavy foundation. Thick, matte products tend to cling to texture. Geller favors lightweight, buildable coverage that helps skin appear plumper and more even.
- Skip excess powder. If you need to set makeup, use a tiny amount only in oily areas such as the T-zone. A soft-focus or luminous setting spray can help makeup last without dulling the skin’s glow.
- Focus on radiance, not coverage. Cream blushes, liquid highlighters, and sheer lip colors all add dimension without exaggerating dryness or lines.
Makeup should evolve with you, not against you. A luminous finish starts with hydration, thoughtful product choices, and confidence in your skin today. Make small adjustments, like swapping a matte foundation for a tinted moisturizer or skipping that extra dusting of powder, and test out the difference.
