Mónica Di Giacomo’s journey from weighing 320 pounds to becoming a competitive bodybuilder is more than a story of weight loss; it’s a testament to resilience and transformation. Her story, spanning over a decade, reflects the dedication required to rebuild both body and mind. Now a bodybuilder in Fort Lauderdale, she represents hope for those facing similar health and emotional challenges.
For Mónica, the path to this achievement was far from simple. Growing up in Miami during the 1980s, she never fit society’s narrow standards of beauty, which fueled cycles of extreme dieting and emotional eating. Personal losses—including her grandfather’s suicide and her mother’s death from cancer—compounded feelings of invisibility and low self-worth.
Medical wake-up call and first steps to change
The turning point came at her 37th birthday, during a routine medical check-up. Her doctor delivered a stark warning: her cholesterol was over 400, blood pressure 155/110, prediabetes diagnosed, and her weight had reached 145 kilograms. “You won’t make it to your next visit if you don’t change,” he told her. Speaking with USA Today, Mónica described how confronting these facts made the urgency of her situation undeniable.

Determined to take control, she worked with a registered dietitian and underwent gastric sleeve surgery, understanding that the procedure was only the beginning. “People think surgery is magic, but it’s not. You have to change your life,” she told the outlet. Physical transformation required more than medical intervention—it demanded patience, education, and emotional resilience.
At first, gyms rejected her, citing health risks and doubting her commitment. Undeterred, Mónica began exercising independently, cycling and walking on treadmills twice weekly, driven simply by the goal to survive. Eventually, she found a trainer willing to guide her through a comprehensive fitness plan.
Nutrition, discipline, and body transformation
Mónica’s fitness journey involved mastering nutrition, emotional balance, and discipline. She learned to track macronutrients rather than calories and to nourish her body with multiple daily meals containing proteins, vegetables, healthy fats, and sufficient carbohydrates—2,500 calories a day, including 147 grams of protein and 321 grams of carbs. Her trainer helped her manage anxiety and develop healthy habits, such as controlled nighttime snacking, which gradually became unnecessary.
The process wasn’t purely physical. Emotional struggles persisted, including tears during workouts, memories of teenage insecurities, and frustration over focusing solely on pounds lost instead of muscle gained. Her trainer emphasized every small victory, helping Mónica build confidence and mental resilience alongside her physical transformation.
Over the years, she shed an additional 55 kilograms, gained significant muscle, and underwent surgeries to remove excess skin. She no longer needed medications for blood pressure, diabetes, or cholesterol. Reclaiming her self-image, she also found love, marrying her trainer, Marino Di Giacomo, in 2022. “She was my heaviest client, now she’s the fittest. She has my heart,” he shared.
Now weighing 62 kilograms with 14% body fat, Mónica competes not only for personal achievement but to inspire middle-aged women to prioritize health and self-care. On stage, the bodybuilder reflects that the most important transformation is internal: overcoming fear, self-doubt, and emotional scars. Her story emphasizes that true fitness encompasses mind, body, and spirit, showing the power of perseverance and self-love.
