M\u00f3nica Bettencourt-Dias believes the answer may lie in cellular heterogeneity, the fact that a tumor is not one uniform enemy but a mixed population of cells with different traits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Portuguese molecular biologist became the first woman and the first person born outside Spain to lead the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crg.eu\/en\/content\/about-us-general-information-organization\/director\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Centre for Genomic Regulation<\/a> in Barcelona. She now oversees 476 scientists from 47 nationalities, and she says understanding the <a href=\"https:\/\/okdiario.com\/metabolic\/en\/health\/chemotherapy-tries-to-break-tumor-dna-but-one-protein-may-help-cancer-cells-repair-the-damage-and-survive-treatment-28387\/\">few tumor cells that escape therapy <\/a>could shape the next major advance in cancer research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tumors are not one enemy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A tumor may look like a single lump on a scan, but its cells can differ in their <a href=\"https:\/\/okdiario.com\/metabolic\/en\/psychology\/manel-esteller-epigenetics-and-cancer-expert-we-cant-change-our-genes-but-we-can-influence-how-they-behave-through-what-we-eat-29114\/\">genes<\/a>, behavior, and survival tactics. A 2017 National Cancer Institute analysis found that drug-sensitive cells can die while <a href=\"https:\/\/okdiario.com\/metabolic\/en\/health\/the-fda-approved-the-first-protein-degrader-drug-for-breast-cancer-and-the-twist-is-that-it-treats-the-target-by-making-the-body-destroy-it-instead-of-blocking-it-28063\/\">resistant groups survive<\/a>, expand, and eventually dominate the tumor, although the pattern can vary by cancer type and treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe next big question in cancer is cellular heterogeneity, which allows it to survive treatments,\u201d Bettencourt-Dias said. Some cells escape the drugs and continue evolving into something new. That is the escape route researchers want to close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A map of every cell<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To catch those survivors, researchers need more than an average reading from a piece of tumor tissue. Bettencourt-Dias points to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41592-024-02565-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high-resolution spatial proteomics<\/a>, a way to map proteins inside individual cells and show where those cells sit next to one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Proteins do much of the daily work in a cell, from carrying signals to repairing damage. Mapping them in place could reveal small pockets with different defenses, much like spotting a few people taking a side street while the main crowd moves in another direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 2025 spatial cancer profiling project described distinct tumor microregions with different genetic, metabolic, and immune features. The interview does not present this technology as a ready-made cure, and researchers still need to learn which patterns reliably predict treatment resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tiny structures with a big role<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her own laboratory focuses on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crg.eu\/en\/programmes-groups\/bettencourt-dias-lab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">centrioles<\/a>, tiny structures that help organize the cell\u2019s internal framework and support accurate cell division. Bettencourt-Dias says humans inherit the first centrioles from the father because they form part of the sperm\u2019s propulsion system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The correct number matters. Bettencourt-Dias wants researchers to combine curiosity-driven biology with <a href=\"https:\/\/okdiario.com\/metabolic\/en\/health\/an-ai-can-spot-pancreatic-cancer-years-before-diagnosis-hiding-in-data-doctors-already-collect-28278\/\">artificial intelligence<\/a> and powerful computing to study how environments shape living things and to explore the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crg.eu\/en\/news\/conversation-monica-bettencourt-dias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">design of new proteins or cells<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The center also co-manages the <a href=\"https:\/\/ega-archive.org\/about\/ega\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Genome-phenome Archive<\/a>, which securely stores and shares identifiable genetic, phenotypic, and clinical research data. Large resources like this give scientists more material for detecting patterns that would be difficult to spot one sample at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The idea is to use AI to sort enormous amounts of information and decide which questions to test first. Scientists and journalists both need better ways to explain uncertainty, evidence, and changing conclusions, she said, adding that \u201cwe have an urgent duty to find new ways to communicate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That may sound separate from cancer biology, but it is not. Still, she warns that Europe has many programs for attracting researchers and too few for persuading them to stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In her view, Europe cannot compete with the United States and China through money alone. Its strongest cards are freedom for curiosity-led research, open data, collaboration, and steady investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cancer question is not only how to kill more tumor cells.
