The Renaissance philosopher Michel de Montaigne was not giving home-design advice when he wrote that people should reserve “a backshop, wholly our own and entirely free”. He was describing a protected space inside the mind.

His main point was simple, but demanding. A person can love family, do a job, meet obligations, and take part in public life without surrendering every private judgment to other people’s expectations. The inner room is where we recover the ability to think, choose, and belong to ourselves.

A room inside the mind

The key image is a back room, the private area behind a shop’s public counter. It is away from customers and daily business. In basic terms, it is the part of the self that is not always on display, available, or asking for approval.

Read More: In Asia they’re a daily staple, in your kitchen just a curiosity: these humble shoots sweep the gut clean while steadying blood sugar

That distinction matters. The room is not a secret identity or a place to hide wrongdoing. It is a mental reserve where praise, criticism, status, and pressure lose some of their power, allowing a person to examine what they believe before the outside world answers for them.

Freedom without running away

The passage appears in the essay commonly translated as “Of Solitude.” There, the French thinker says people may have spouses, children, possessions, and health, but should not attach themselves so completely that their happiness depends on those things alone. The warning is about dependence, not affection.

So this is not a call to abandon ordinary life. Someone can answer work messages, care for relatives, pay the electric bill, and still keep a corner of the mind that is not rented out to deadlines or public opinion.

In practical terms, that means remaining close to others without becoming a stranger to yourself.

Why he needed this retreat

The idea grew from a life that mixed public duty with intense self-examination. Born in 1533, the writer left his judicial career at age 37 and withdrew to his family estate in 1571, where he read and began putting his thoughts on paper.

He did not disappear from society forever, but the retreat gave him room to test his own judgment.

Books One and Two of the Essays first appeared in 1580. A much larger edition followed in 1588, and Marie de Gournay prepared another in 1595, three years after his death.

The repeated revisions left a work that reads as an ongoing attempt to understand a changing human being, rather than a set of final answers.

Solitude is not loneliness

This is where the old metaphor meets modern research. Loneliness is the painful feeling that needed relationships are missing, while solitude can be chosen and meaningful. One is an unwanted gap, while the other may be a deliberate pause.

A 2023 study led by psychologist Netta Weinstein at the University of Reading tracked 178 adults in the United States and United Kingdom for up to 21 days.

Read More: Dariush Mozaffarian, cardiologist: “People obsess over protein when they should focus on healthy fats, the most important nutrient group of all”

More time alone was linked with less stress and greater autonomy, meaning more freedom to choose and be oneself, but it could also coincide with loneliness and lower satisfaction on some days.

Renaissance philosopher Michel de Montaigne argued for cultivating a private inner sanctuary of the mind to maintain true personal liberty.

The negative effects were reduced when people had chosen their solitude rather than having it forced on them.

The limit of the idea

Chosen time alone is not automatically healthy, but the philosopher’s advice should not become a slogan that dismisses isolation.

A separate study led by Sharon Ost-Mor at the University of Cambridge examined 520 older adults and found that positive solitude was associated with fewer depressive symptoms and weakened the link between loneliness and those symptoms.

Because researchers measured people at one point in time, the study could not prove that solitude caused the improvement.

That nuance fits the original argument surprisingly well: the inner room is not a locked cell. Its purpose is to strengthen a person for life with others, not to replace friendship, care, community, or help when help is needed.

What an inner room looks like today

Most people do not have a stone tower or hours of uninterrupted reading. They do have small openings, such as a walk without headphones, ten minutes before checking notifications, a private notebook, or a quiet commute before the traffic noise and phone pings take over.

The room can be made of time rather than walls.

Read More: Your eggplant contains real nicotine, but the number of servings needed to match one cigarette is more than you can eat

The real test is whether a person can pause long enough to ask, “What do I think before everyone else tells me?” That question can interrupt the automatic chase for approval, productivity, and status. Sometimes a few quiet minutes are enough.

A small defense of freedom

More than four centuries later, the image still works because outside pressure has not vanished, it has simply found faster delivery systems. Messages arrive instantly, opinions travel in crowds, and even rest can feel like another task to optimize.

The inner room offers no escape from responsibility; it offers a place from which responsibility can be chosen more clearly. At the end of the day, that is the freedom the essayist was protecting, the ability to remain connected to the world without handing the world the only key to your mind.

The original reflection was published in Book One of the Essays, in the chapter commonly translated as Of Solitude.

What does it mean to keep a room that nobody else can enter?
