The study found that Gr43a neurons released thyrostimulin, a hormone-like messenger, which helped activate <a href=\"https:\/\/okdiario.com\/metabolic\/en\/health\/6-quick-habits-to-keep-your-hippocampus-strong-and-memory-sharp-after-age-65-19916\/\">memory circuits<\/a> in a brain region called the mushroom body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mushroom body is not a mushroom, of course. It is an insect brain center involved in learning and memory. For the most part, it plays a role for flies that is easy to compare, loosely, with a command room for sorting important experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That finding fits with 2017 research in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/ncomms15510\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nature Communications<\/a><\/em> showing that long-term memory in fruit flies depends on increased energy use in the mushroom body. The new study adds a sharper twist. Sugar sensing after learning may help decide when that memory machinery turns on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why fruit flies matter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Fruit flies may look simple buzzing around a kitchen, but their brains are useful for this kind of question. Scientists can switch specific neurons on or off, record activity in living brain cells, and then connect those changes to behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One technique used here was calcium imaging, which lets researchers watch brain cells become active through light-based signals.
